I can't believe we've been on the road for a week. We are settling into a routine, breakfast, hike, breaking up camp, driving, stopping for lunch to sightsee or play, setting up camp, hike or swim, cooking, guitar, having fun. We should probably see more but we are taking it easy, enjoying what we see as much as we can and trying not to do too much. The kids can only take so much driving in one day.
Up the 5 today (drive a bit boring).
Stopped in Portland for a grocery store stop and found a great park to have a picnic at lunch and let the kids play. Portland looks like a pretty neat city. Great downtown and the neighborhood close to this park had interesting looking houses.
Crossing into Washington State.
Stopped at Seaquest National Park at the bottom of a road that goes up to Mt. St. Helen's.
Campground was decent. Really beautiful setting among tall trees but it was really hot and the Mosquitos were horrible! I could hardly cook dinner because hundreds of them were attracted to the stove.
The kids went exploring and got bitten by wasps.
So we got off the campsite for a while. Just two miles down the road there was access to Silver Lake. We all got a swim and cooled off. The kids loved cannon balling off the little jetty.
I love swimming in a lake. So, we could have driven up to Mt. St. Helen's (90 mile round trip) but decided against it. We had a lot more fun spending that time swimming in the lake and not cooped up in the car.
